The last time I wrote about the small straw-bail building we’re constructing here for the host family we had just laid the concrete. Since then we’ve carried on to the parts that are less dirty.
| We hand-mixed mortar and cemented in two columns of cinderblocks around the perimeter of the cement slabs, using a hand level. |
| After cementing in some pegs we topped them with bottles to avoid cutting pets and small children who run around here. |
| Then we placed the first row of bails… |
…and then the second and third and fourth rows. |
Some bails we had to shorten and retie (which totally sucked). By the way, this is Katie; she had been working with the horses for several months and occasionally helped us too because she’s a good sport. This outfit is solely for preventing straw itches, not for fashion. She returned to Scotland this week. |
| Alan spent a whole day cutting rebar with an angle grinder into different lengths so that we could stab the bars into the bails to hold the rows together. |
We decided it was more structurally sound, though, to jam 2-meter rebar in bottom blocks on both sides of the wall to squeeze the bails together. |
Hopefully the walls should be up by the end of the week! Then we have to figure out how to make a sturdy roof...
